Grain Tower Battery

2020 (United Kingdom)

On a beautiful Summer night, the tide was low enough to get to the Grain Tower & after a long time wanting to visit, it did not let me down! There were beautiful long shadows from the low sun evolving into a sky full of drama.

The original gun tower was built in 1855 & it was adapted over time including major use during WWI & WWII. Some of the walls are over 3 metres thick. The defence fort stands proudly around 500 metres from the shore. It takes 15 mins of muddy trekking down the causeway to reach it. Timing is key - at high tide, the fort is completely surrounded by water.
