Sanatorium Imereti

2020 (Georgia)

Sanatorium Imereti is an incredible building - three wings linked by a magnificent staircase through the middle. Either side is an equally impressive spiral staircase. One side is occupied by IDP (Internally Displaced Person) occupants from the Abkhazia-Georgia conflict & the other side - complete with a ballroom - is falling into disrepair.

We arrived at sundown and it created an hour of photographic wonder - the perfect place at the perfect time. The tall windows overlooking the staircase have an amazing view all the way out to the surrounding mountains. The real surprise is the domed room at the end of the wing - not easy to shoot but a wonderful place, the likes of which I'd not seen before.
